make collection policy explicitly trans inclusive

Despite what I wrote in my last post here, since our new Barnard hosted blog doesn't allow comments, we will occasionally need to have discussions here on LiveJournal or elsewhere. (btw note that we're also on Facebook with no log in required and Twitter)

Today's query is similar to one I posted in 2008 about adding zines on femme identity by people of all genders to our collection development policy. The revised policy states:

Barnard's zines are written by New York City and other urban women with an emphasis on zines by women of color. We collect zines on feminism and femme identity by people of all genders. A woman's gender is self-defined. The zines are personal and political publications on activism, anarchism, body image, third wave feminism, gender, parenting, queer community, riot grrrl, sexual assault, and other topics.

I now propose that we add in language to make explicit that we include zines by transgender authors in any state of presentation, identity, or transition. Anyone who has ever identified or been identified as a woman's zines will be informed by that identification and is therefore in scope for our collection.

But of course I am not trans, am not a gender studies expert, and am prone as anyone to write something incorrect or even insulting even as I try to do the right thing. So...I'm looking for help in crafting a new version of our collection statement. Please share your comments and suggestions on Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, via email or by any other method you can think of.

I'm also considering removing the first part of the statement, as the NYC and urban emphases haven't proved to be as important as I'd anticipated. Here's a draft:

Barnard's zines are written by women and people of all transgender expression with an emphasis on zines by women and trans of color. We collect zines on feminism and femme identity by people of all genders. A woman's gender is self-defined. The zines are personal and political publications on activism, anarchism, body image, third wave feminism, gender, parenting, queer community, riot grrrl, sexual assault, and other topics.

Comment on it, or share a new one of your own!

Thanks, Jenna

Most of them are concentrated in the United States and Europe, with the occasional pin on a New Zealand or Australian location. In some ways, this illustrates where zines have become most popular - but it also shows the lack of information about zinesters that exists in the public realm.

So be recognized, zinesters! Email zinemap@hotmail.com to be included on the map, whether you are an individual, distro, library or whatever else.
Zine of the Week: Best of Bright Year

You're alone. You're in the midst of writing a research paper, reading four different books for three different classes, and your head is about to explode. You know that you like to read, but this amount of work is just killing the drive to look at any more pieces of text. You feel like you haven't picked up a decent fiction in months.
A lot of Barnard/Columbia students are facing this same exact predicament. Lost in the pages of their sociology books, they lust after the brief pleasure of having time to sit down with a novel, memoir or short story and really enjoy reading again. But where would you get the time?

This is where the Best of Bright Year zine comes in.
This zine is a collection of well-written short personal essays by author Kirsten Major, where she talks about her life in short two or three page snippets. When I was reading this zine, I was struck by just how the writing was easy to read and connect with - there was never a dull moment. This zine goes over everything from relationships to philosophy and not without some good-natured irony along the way. It is the perfect antidote to your biochemistry homework.
Stop on by the second floor of the Barnard Library and check out the zine rack for Best of Bright Year this week, and get the full synopsis here.

Have you ever been folding countless pieces of paper in a dimly lit room with your hard rock/metal/underground hip hop/80's pop music playing and thought about how lonely the life of a zinester can be? We spend hours and hours crafting our vision, pouring all our energies into the finished product that is another issue of our zine. And, although they are beautiful and wonderful, you may still wonder: who is going to read this?

Well, fear not! Before you go off to sulk, check out the website We Make Zines. We Make Zines is "a place for zinesters - writers and readers" that serves as an online community for anyone who has a profound passion for zines. They feature discussion forums, blogrolls, and member profiles for you to peruse should you want to find someone to trade zines with. And, if you're really ambitious, you can check out their event calendar which features zine events near your area.

For all of you who want to attend New York events, there are two really cool ones coming up post-Thanksgiving break.

The first is the Zinester's Guide to NYC Zine-vasion, which is being held at St. Mark's Bookshop in downtown Manhattan. There will be an introduction to zines by expert zinesters and book makers such as Esther Smith of How to Make Books fame and Ayun Halliday, the creator of the East Village Inky. This event is on Tuesday November 30th at 7-9pm.

The second is downtown at feminist bookstore Bluestockings on Sunday December 5th at 7-9pm. The Zinester's Guide to NYC Contributor Smackdown is, unfortunately, not a smackdown but a zine reading and potluck event with our very own Jenna Freedman and 8 other fabulous zinesters.

Check out We Make Zines and I hope to see you at either of these events!

Zine of the Week: At the Base of the Mountain

At the Base of the Mountain is a brilliant perzine about the struggles of one mixed-race Colombian/Caucasian American and her attempts at reconciling her lived experience with what others perceive her to be.
When I was reading this zine, I got caught up in the great writing that author Bella produces. It is a really accessible zine because Bella does not put up any pretenses: her experience is something to be looked at from the inside rather than a pretentious analysis.
In the zine, she talks about being mistaken for white in some places and for Colombian in others. She talks about living in a family where she appears different from her siblings and where she is sometimes judged for it. And, most importantly, she talks about how she deals with each of these issues in her own life. This self-described "herstory" touches on how society draws the line between "us" and "the other," prompting a lot of great ideas about diversity.
If you're looking for a jolly zine, this is not necessarily the place to go, but if you want to read something that is intriguing, accessible in its writing, and very pertinent to the idea of diversity, go for At the Base of the Mountain.

Check it out in the Barnard Library (for the call number, check out this CLIO record)

Zines - and particularly zines by women - are being picked up by libraries across the country. Particularly in an academic setting, it might seem strange to include zines because they are not formally published works, but more and more they are coming into the research environment. For instance, Duke University's Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, part of the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library, contains zines as part of their larger collection on works by women in the South.
Regardless of whether you are using zines in your research paper, the center is inviting anyone that lives outside of a 100-mile radius from Durham, NC to apply for the Mary Lily Research Grant: a maximum award of $1000 dollars for any faculty member, graduate or undergraduate student, or independent scholar with a research project requiring the use of materials held by the Sallie Bingham Center.

Here are some more details should this peak your interest:
The Sallie Bingham Center documents the public and private lives of women through a wide variety of published and unpublished sources. Collections of personal papers, family papers, and organizational records complement print sources such as books and periodicals. Particular strengths of the Sallie Bingham Center are feminism in the U.S., women's prescriptive literature from the 19th & 20th centuries, girls' literature, zines, artist's books by women, gender & sexuality, and the history & culture of women in the South. An overview of our collecting areas can be found here: http://library.duke.edu/specialcollections/bingham/overview.html.

Grant money may be used for travel, photocopying, and living expenses while pursuing research at the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library.

The deadline for application is January 31, 2011 by 5:00 PM EST. Recipients will be announced in March 2011. Grants must be used between April 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.

For more information and to download a copy of the application form, please visit: http://library.duke.edu/specialcollections/services/grants/index.html

Applicants are encouraged to contact Kelly Wooten, the Bingham Center's research services librarian, before submitting their application. In our experience, those who spoke with a staff member about their projects produced stronger applications.
QZAP - the Queer Zine Archive Project in Seattle, Washington - is a great collection devoted specifically to zines about queer sexuality and by people who identify as queer. They want to record a "living history" of queer independent publishing and provide the collection as a resource for both academics and anyone else interested in queer zines. While they have a physical collection, they have been making a strong effort to put all of them into a downloadable catalog.
What are you doing this Fri., Sat, or Sun. (Nov. 5-7)? Well, what you should be doing is heading out to PS-1, where Printed Matter, Inc. presents the NY ART BOOK FAIR.

The three day event is free and promises zines aplenty. There are 45 international participants listed as Artists' Zines exhibitors, coming from Zurich, Tokyo, San Francisco, and our own little backyard of Brooklyn, just to name a few. There will also be a space designated for informal zine-exchanges all weekend, with an official Zine-Trade-Meet-up on Sunday, from 3-5pm.

Within the NY Art Book Fair, the Contemporary Artist's Book Conference will also be taking place. The Conference consists of six panel sessions covering a variety of artists book and library related topics, including "Riot Grrrl: Traces of a Movement" - a panel in which your very own Barnard Zine Librarian, Jenna Freedman, will be speaking! "Riot Grrrl: Traces of a Movement" takes place on Saturday, 2-3:30pm.

Please note that while the NY Art Book Fair is free of charge, entrance to the Contemporary Artist's Book Conference sessions are not. A full weekend pass to all six sessions is a bit pricey, but a single session ticket will put you back just $20.

CALL for ENTRIES Syndicate Product: THE META-COMICS ISSUE

http://www.syndicateproduct.com/2010/09/call-for-entires-syndicate-product-meta.html

(I love that A.j. calls for entries, not submissions.)

The META-COMICS ISSUE will include comics and essays ABOUT comics and sequential art. You certainly DO NOT have to be an artist to contribute – essays are very much welcome and encouraged!

Some potential ideas:

The creative process of drawing comics: Where do your ideas come from? Why do you draw comics?

Comics-related disasters: From the cat knocking over the ink bottle to basement floods that resulted in floating longboxes.

__ broke my heart: As a comics reader, the most soul-crushing, genre-destroying, why-the-hell-am-I-still-reading this storylines you’ve endured in mainstream comics. Why did you stop reading some titles?

Creative space: Where do you draw? What rituals do you perform? (E.g., Lynda Barry always begins a drawing session by writing out the alphabet a few times with a brush and ink.)

Reading comics: Are there comics that left you so emotionally wrecked that you’re scared to read them again? Flipside: are there books you have to re-read every year?

Collecting comics: Are you a Wednesday regular? Did your mom throw out your collection when you went to college? Have you ever sold off parts of your collection for rent, food, or more comics?

Comics and relationships: Friendships and romances found or lost over comics.

Memories of stores past and present: Good and bad stories from the comic shop. Did/do you work in a comic shop?

Inspirations: Artists, teachers, storytellers?

Tangentially related ideas: Terrible, little-seen comic book movie/TV adaptations. Tales from actual comic book conventions.

Previously self-published comics (either print or web) are welcome if they relate to the topic.

SPECIFICATIONS

Comic artists: Final art size should reduce to around 4.5 x 7.5 inches. Four pages maximum (but if it’s really good, this can be negotiated). B&W only. Send art as 300dpi TIF files if grayscale scans, 600dpi TIF if bitmap scans. Also, once entries are in, I may be looking for small illustrations to accompany some of the essays.

Writers: Between 400-1200 words is acceptable. If you need to go longer, please do. If the writing is good enough, people will want to read it to the end. I'll let you know if a piece is simply too huge, rambling, unwieldy, or needs editing. Send essays as OpenOffice, MS Word, or plain text files, or paste the text into an e-mail.

Contributors will receive a copy of the final project.

Due date and where to submit: First deadline is JANUARY 7, 2011*. Submit your entries to syndprod@gmail.com. If you want to mail them, send them to: A.j. Michel, PO Box 877, Lansdowne, PA 19050.

* Due date subject to extension if needed, as it usually is.

We are soooo excited about this new zine collection:

Call for Submissions/Donations
Radical Southern Zine Archive Project
University of Alabama

The University of Alabama is looking for submissions/donations for a new archive that will collect zines from Southern authors, and zines about Southern experience. This collection will be housed within the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library and once cataloged will be available for any scholar or zine enthusiast looking for research opportunities or just a nice afternoon read. This project began as the brainchild of our students and staff who have been creating zines, using zines in the classroom, and have a general love of all things zine related. The goal of the collection is to gather together the work of individuals who are writing in the South, writing about the South and zinsters who are Southerners living across the world. It is our belief and hope that the Radical Southern Zine Archive will help bring together the work being produced everywhere about the South and house it where all can enjoy it. We want all those Southern perspectives so send us your zines and let's get this process started. If anyone has any questions please email us and we will get back to you ASAP. The official opening of the Radical Southern Zine Archive will take place in September, and will kick off a yearlong celebration of the zine and the zine community. We look forward to hearing from each and every one of you.

Send your zines to:
Radical South Zine Archive
PO Box 869066
Tuscaloosa, AL 35486-0081
radicalsouthzinearchive@gmail.com

Come fall/winter Barnard will be migrating to a content management system for its website. In preparation for this migration, we're reorganizing all of our web content, including the zines site.

We'd love some feedback from y'all about what makes sense/what categories things belong in, so we're asking zine collection users and potential users to do a card sorting exercise.
